From the story: John McCain hasn't given much insight publicly about the person he will choose to become his vice-presidential running mate. But he told a television program on Tuesday night that he would have a "difficult" time picking someone who didn't have a pro-life view on abortion. Read more…
I hope that the PA GOP is listening to this. The PA GOP operates under the assumption that any ticket with a pro-life candidate must be “balanced” with a “moderate pro-choice” running mate. This is a fallacy! Note the disastrous paring of Mike Fisher and Jane Earll for governor and lt. governor in 2002.
In 2007, with a strong pro-life Superior Court candidate, Cheryl Allan, already on the ballot for the fall election, state GOP leaders wanted to “balance” the ballot with pro-choice Jane Earll for the other open Superior Court position. In a 65 – 45 split, the rank-and-file state committee members overrode the party leadership and endorsed pro-life Jackie Shogan. Guess what? Both pro-life candidates won!
Despite this history, watch for the PA GOP leadsership to urge a “pro-life / pro-choice balance” in the presidential ticket.
