As the short term attention swings to the national day of prayer, let me remind you there is something else of significance happening on May 1st.
May 1st is Ascension Thursday or what Catholics commonly refer to as Ascension of the Lord. It is the day when Jesus was lifted up to Heaven after 40 days from his Rise on Easter. While some will join the prayer party for the day, Ascension Thursday is always a day of obligation for Catholics. That means Catholics must make it to church. It's not just a national day of prayer, it's a global day of prayer.
The reality of the Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of belief) of Christianity all affirm "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." The denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection.
