Here He Comes, “Naïve Man”

From Gary Bauer of American Values: Former President Jimmy Carter served in the White House from January 1977 until he was replaced by Ronald Reagan in January 1981. I was proudly one of the Reagan team that cleaned up the mess Carter left behind. Unfortunately, he is still leaving foreign policy messes in his wake.

Next week, Carter will go to Damascus, Syria, to meet with Khalid Meshal, the head of the Islamic terrorist group Hamas. The trip is wrong on so many levels. It undermines U.S. efforts to isolate the terrorist group, and it shows our Islamofascist enemies a divided America. Carter has no authority to negotiate anything with Hamas or any other foreign power. The meeting will predictably be exploited by Hamas to strengthen its hand.

Will Carter ask Hamas to end its obscene anti-Semitic indoctrination of Palestinian children? Will he tell them that they will get no international support as they continue to strap bombs on women and children and send them to kill Israeli civilians? Will he insist that they concede Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state? Don’t bank on it.

Those of us old enough to remember how President Carter personally directed the Iranian hostage rescue attempt from an unsecure phone at the White House will certainly agree with Bauer’s assessment.
