The 180-yard tunnel that provided the path of escape for 23 of the world’s most dangerous Islamic terrorists, including Jamal al-Badawi, the man convicted of playing a commanding role in the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 that murdered 17 US sailors, emerged within a mosque.
Intelligence sources have stated that the prison escape was well planned and coordinated by Yemeni Islamic leaders, Yemeni intelligence officials, and prison officials. The terrorists escaped from their underground prison last Friday – a prison guarded by Yemenis who fought in Afghanistan in the 1980’s against the Russians and were awarded positions in security forces upon their return.
Yemen is second only to Saudi Arabia for having the most al Qaeda style terrorists in their country, including those holding positions of religious leadership and key intelligence positions. It was with the assistance of these Islamic and intelligence officials that permitted the convicts escape from the headquarters for the political security forces.
