Dear Powerball

Brian sent an email to PowerBlog! aksing us to post this. Here is what he wrote:

Dear Powerball:
I implore you to bring attention to a work of art located in public view downtown that is highly offensive to all Christians.

Located on the side of a building at Strawberry Way and Smithfield, the mural depicts Pittsburgh icons Andy Warhol and Andrew Carnegie. Above is a picture that appeared in the Post-Gazette.

As you can see, Warhol is clearly patterned after classic iconography of Jesus Christ. In the place of Christ's throne is Warhol's beauty chair. Instead of a crown, Warhol has a hair dryer. In place of the Word is some type of magazine. Most egregious is Warhol's right hand, lifted in a"hang ten, dude" manner, that gratuitously calls to mind Christ marking the Trinity with three fingers. And let's not forget the significance of the color purple (suggesting Royalty, Kingship).>

I struggle to believe the resemblence is an accident.

The project is sponsored by
www.sproutfund.org/ Note there will be a dedication ceremony on Friday, September 30. Also note the art is meant to evoke a sense of "make-over" in Pittsburgh, suggesting that part of that "renaissance" is replacing our religous heritage with secular and pop culture.

Please let the Pittsburgh region know that we will not allow this!

Is this cause for concern or much to do about nothing? Any thoughts on this?

That is really stunning. I can't imagine it is a coincidence. Any artist with an ounce of training would be attuned to this sort of thing.

I don't know. I mean, it looks like the person did try to make the picture resemble iconic art. But I just didn't have a negative reaction to it. If it is sinful what the artist did, at least I don't have to take responsibility for it.

I think we, as Christians, have to pick our battles. Raising a stick over things like this is kind of like getting upset by the Sheetz poster "Grab life by the meatballs".
