A Symbol of Sorts

Last week I made my stance known on the issue of the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, PA. The design was presented as a red crescent. That reminded some folks of islam. Including myself.

We had Joanne M. Hanley, the Superintendent of the Flight 93 National Memorial, on the show to talk about the design of the Flight 93 Memorial. While she made it clear none of the controversy was intentional, she did not convince me the design should remain.

While most of you agreed, there are some that did not. A few wrote me to defend the design as just a mere arch and it has no meaning. Well tell that to the folks at Burger King now that the shoe is on the foot of islam.

In the latest example of Western business interests giving in to pressure by offended Muslims, Burger King reportedly has withdrawn an ice cream product after complaints that a label design looks like the Arabic script for "Allah."

British media reported at the weekend that the fast-food restaurant chain pulled the "BK Cone" and pledged to redesign the label after Muslim customers complained.

So we can have an red crescent stand as a memorial to people who were murdered in the name of "islam" but id and ice cream swirl resembles a symbol for "allah" on a label, we have a major issue?

The product label bears a pattern representing a stylized swirl of soft serve ice cream. But some customer looked at it sideways and thought they could see something else. Maybe that's the whole problem. Some are looking at religion sideways and seeing something else. I suggest we all keep religion out of these petty battles and just enjoy an ice cream cone together!
