An unrepentant House Speaker John M. Perzel delivered a spirited defense of the legislative pay raise over the weekend before a crowd of fellow Republicans, saying lawmakers earned the increases of up to 54 percent by putting in long hours and sacrificing time with their families to help their constituents.
Perzel, in his first expansive public statement about the pay raise since it was approved July 7, noted that the new $81,050 base salary -- second-highest in the country -- is half of a congressman's salary. He said it more closely tracks salaries in the private sector, where he said utility line workers make $90,000-plus a year and immigrant farm workers in Lancaster County make $50,000 or more.
