New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin briefed Nation of Islam chief Louis Farrakhan about damage to the city's levees in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. That's sparked Farrakhan to speak of a deliberate evil plot to murder poor black people by blowing up the levees.
I was wondering why Mayor Nagin would take the time to talk to Farrakhan as his the people who elected him clung to rooftops. The the answer to that question began to develop.
Back in June, the Bayou Buzz reported that Nagin's police department hired Farrakhan deputy Dennis Muhammad to conduct "sensitivity training" sessions for New Orleans' cops after a rise in "anti-police" sentiment in the city.
NOPD police chief Eddie Compass explained that "members of the Nation of Islam have some type of relationship" with the community and might be able to help ease tensions. Chief Compass resigned on Tuesday amidst reports that 249 of his cops had deserted their posts during the Katrina crisis.
This is one poor decision right after another. We will continue to track this story
