When Yor're Broke... Borrow More Money!

Mayor Tom Murphy is considering borrowing another $25 million to pay for repairs to roads, parks and other Pittsburgh infrastructure.

Debt payments -- fueled by years of borrowing to pave roads, buy fire trucks and police cars, and pay salaries for planners and engineers while city tax collections dropped -- currently consume about $90 million a year. That is more than 20 percent of the city's $417.5 million budget for 2005. Mayor Tom Murphy is preparing his last city budget proposal as he ends his third term in office.

Last week the city was ready to write a $50 million check to the state to open a city owned and run casino. Now we are talking a loan to fill potholes. Does anyone at city hall know math?
